Cartagena

Salsa and live music for first-timers

Overview

You do not need to arrive as a dancer to enjoy salsa in Cartagena. Many bars offer a short lesson early in the evening when the floor is still open. Live bands play son, salsa, and tropical sets that pull locals and visitors onto the same floor. Listen for clusters of people near open doors in Getsemaní and the old city. If you are shy, go early for the lesson, stay for one set, and leave when you are happy. Afro-Colombian and champeta rooms are a different vibe: darker lights, heavier bass, and longer nights.
